Both networks can provide full fibre

OFNL and Openreach operate separate access networks. OFNL uses FTTP. Openreach offers FTTP too, alongside older fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) and copper services. It is misleading to compare all Openreach connections with older copper broadband. Sources: OFNL and Openreach broadband technologies.

OFNL FTTP and the main Openreach connection types
ConnectionCable to your homeWhat to compare
OFNL FTTPFibre to the propertyAvailable retail packages, upload speeds, total cost and provider terms.
Openreach FTTPFibre to the propertyThe same package details; this is also a full-fibre connection.
Openreach FTTCFibre to a street cabinet, then copperThe estimated speed for your line, as the final copper section affects performance.

Openreach explains the difference between FTTP and FTTC. Compare the speed and price you can actually order, rather than theoretical fibre capacity or a network name alone.

Which networks can I use?

Availability is specific to the property. An OFNL-connected home may have other network options, but nearby coverage does not confirm that another network can serve your address. Check the OFNL provider directory and Openreach availability checker, then ask the retail provider to confirm the order.

Can I switch between OFNL and Openreach?

Yes, if the new provider can supply your address on the other network. You are switching retail broadband services; the two networks do not become interchangeable. A new connection, engineer visit or different equipment may be needed. Ask the new provider to arrange the switch and confirm any interruption and early termination charges. Which is better value?

  • Compare packages with similar download and upload speeds.
  • Calculate the minimum-term cost, including compulsory setup, equipment and scheduled price changes.
  • Check the router, support hours, public or static IP options and contract terms that matter to you.
  • Treat customer review scores as one source of evidence. They are not controlled network performance tests.

What about Virgin Media or mobile broadband?

Check those services separately with the provider. An OFNL connection alone does not establish Virgin Media, mobile or satellite availability or suitability. If considering wireless broadband, check indoor reception, data limits and the service terms for your home.
